Backstrom has surgery


(St. Paul, MN) -- 5-17-13-- Minnesota Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom is recovering
from successful sports hernia surgery. Backstrom is expected to be fully
recovered in time for the beginning of the 2013-14 season. He can become an
unrestricted free agent this summer. The 35-year-old was injured during

Punter Jeff Locke, a fifth round pick out of UCLA, guard Travis Bond, a seventh rounder from North Carolina and Jeff Baca, a sixth round guard out of UCLA all signed rookie deals. Harding a finalist for NHL award

Masterton Trophy, given for perseverance, dedication and sportsmanship.
Harding was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis just prior to the start of the

Vikings sign three LB's

draft picks. The team inked linebackers Gerald Hodges and Michael Mauti and

Exotic species fish found in Sartell river


(Sartell, MN) -- An angler bowfishing on the Mississippi River north of
Sartell last week shot a 25-pound grass carp -- considered an exotic
species. Up until recent, the grass carp had only been found in the lower
portions of the Mississippi River in southern Minnesota. DNR fisheries
biologists believe the fish could not have gotten past dams at Coon Rapids,

Darlington Raceway despite missing his crew chief. Kenseth's team saw

Gopher Women Advance to Softball Championship


(Lincoln, NE) -- Junior Sara Moulton threw her second complete game shutout in as many days, helping the Gopher women's softball team advance to the Big Ten Tournament title game with a 1-0 win against Nebraska at Bowlin Stadium yesterday. Major League Baseball has told them the twigs go against the league's contract with Louisville Slugger. The bats are used to raise awareness for breast cancer, which both players' mothers survived.

T-Wolves Waive Brandon Roy


(Minneapolis, MN) -- The Timberwolves waived oft-injured guard Brandon Roy
yesterday. Roy's six-year career has been plauged by knee injuries. He
temporarily retired after the 2010-11 season because of the issues, but
attempted a return with Minnesota this year. He played in just five games

U of M, Vikings agree to deal to play at TCF Bank Stadium

have agreed on a deal that will allow the Vikings to use TCF Bank Stadium
for the 2014 and 2015 NFL seasons while the team's new Vikings stadium is
being built. As part of the agreement, the Vikings will pay the U-of-M

Fishing opener this weekend!


(St. Paul, MN) -- 5-10-13-- Thousands of Minnesota anglers are getting set for this
weekends fishing opener. Even though many lakes in northern Minnesota are
still frozen over, Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Chief Dirk
Peterson is optimistic there will be good fishing where there is open water.

Twins pound lumps on Red Sox


(Boston, MA) -- 5-9-13-- Trevor Plouffe (PLOOF), Justin Morneau and Pedro Florimon
each had three RBI as the Twins outslugged the Red Sox 15-8 last night in
Boston. Ryan Doumit and Aaron Hicks each added a pair of runs batted in.
Plouffe had three hits and scored two runs and Florimon homered and
doubled. Doumit added four hits, including a two-run homer, and scored

Wild face elimination tonight in Chicago


(Chicago, IL) -- 5-9-13-- The Wild will try to avoid elimination when they battle
the Blackhawks tonight in Game Five of their NHL Western Conference
quarterfinal series in Chicago. The Blackhawks blanked the Wild 3-0 on
Tuesday in St. Paul to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven set.

Diamond pitches Twins past Red Sox


(Boston, MA) -- 5-8-13-- Minnesota lefty Scott Diamond tossed seven innings of
shutout ball to help the Twins toppled the Red Sox 6-1 last night in
Beantown. Diamond improved the 3-and-2 on the season. Ryan Doumit lifted a
solo homer and scored twice for Minnesota, which has won two-of-three. Joe
Mauer and Justin Morneau were each 2-for-4 with a run and RBI for the Twins.

Gophers agree to football series with TCU


(Minneapolis, MN) -- 5-8-13-- The Minnesota Golden Gophers will play TCU in
football in a home-and-home series in 2014-15. The Gophers will play at TCU
in Fort Worth on September 13th, 2014. The Horned Frogs will come to
Minneapolis to take on the Gophers on September 5th, 2015. The Gophers
topped TCU 9-7 in the only meeting between the schools in 1974. (MNN)

Former Viking Teddy Brown named to college football HOF


(New York, NY) -- 5-8-13-- Former Minnesota Viking and North Carolina State running
back Ted Brown is part of this year's College Football Hall of Fame class.
Brown starred for the Wolfpack from 1975-78 and was a first-round draft
choice of Minnesota in 1979. As a Viking, he rushed for 4,546 yards from

Twins lose in 11th inning to BoSox


(Boston, MA) -- 5-7-13-- Boston shortstop Stephen Drew doubled home a run in the
11th inning to give the Red Sox a 6-5 victory over the visiting Twins. Drew
also hit a solo homer and drove in three for the game. Dustin Pedroia and
Shane Victorino had solo shots for Boston while David Ortiz doubled in the

two-run homer to back a strong outing from Mike Pelfrey (PELL-free), as the
Twins doubled up the Indians 4-2 to avoid a three-game sweep in Ohio.

Lynx Open Camp Today


5-5-13  The Lynx open training camp today to prepare for the season.  The Lynx have had two straight 27-and-7 seasons and consecutive conference championships.  Minnesota won the WNBA title in 2011 before falling to the Indiana Fever in last year's finals.  The Lynx play their preseason opener May 18th against the Mystics in Bismarck, North Dakota.  MNN

tonight in Cleveland. Minnesota is 1-and-2 so far on the trip after beating

Twins avoid sweep in Detroit


(Detroit, MI) -- 5-2-13-- Minnesota's Justin Morneau and Chris Parmelee each had
two hits and two RBI to lead the Twins to a 6-2 win over the Tigers in
Detroit yesterday. Parmelee hit his second home run of the season and Pedro
Florimon had two hits, an RBI and scored twice for Minnesota. Scott Diamond
pitched six innings of two-run ball for the win as the Twins salvaged the

Wild recall G Kuemper


(St. Paul, MN) -- 5-2-13-- The Wild have recalled goaltender Darcy Kuemper from
Houston of the AHL. Kuemper went 1-and-2 with a 2.08 goals-against-average

 Andre Hollins scored 28 points with nine rebounds and five

After signing with Green Bay's biggest rival, Minnesota Vikings receiver Greg Jennings took out a full-page ad in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Wednesday to thank Packers fans for their support in his first seven NFL seasons.

 

In the ad, titled "A Bittersweet Farewell," Jennings thanked "Packers Nation" for all its support.

"It has been 7 years since I was first blessed with the opportunity to be a part of such a wonderful organization and community. I want to take this time to thank each and every one of you for opening your arms and hearts to my family and me, and for making Green Bay an easy place to love and call home."

Jennings signed a five-year, $47.5 million contract with the Vikings last week.

Wild take on Red Wings in Detroit


The red hot Minnesota Wild took the day off yesterday,
with no practice and no game. The day of relaxation came after a big win on

Grizzlies outclaw Wolves


 Memphis guard Mike Conley poured in 20 points for the
Grizzlies in a 92-77 win over the Timberwolves last night in Tennessee.
Conley added six assists as Memphis ended a two-game losing streak.

Wild finally beat the Canucks


 Minnesota rookie Charlie Coyle scored the

(Undated) -- The NHL has reportedly made a new offer to the player's union. The offer reportedly includes a maximum contract length for players of six years, seven if re-signing with the same team. Twins Sign Harden to Minor League Deal

The 31-year-old had surgery on his right rotator cuff on January 31st and missed the entire 2012 season. Harden made 15 starts for the Oakland A's in 2011, going 4-and-4 with a 5.12 ERA. Span traded to the Nationals for pitching prospect


 The Minnesota Twins got a top pitching prospect in

The Gophers turned the ball over four times and managed just 96 offensive yards, four of which came on the ground. (Madison, WI) -- James White rushed for 175 yards and three scores on 15 carries to lift the Badgers over the Golden Gophers, 38-13, in the battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe. Gophers Down Western Michigan


(Minneapolis, MN) -- Max Shortell tossed for 188 yards and three touchdowns as Minnesota earned a 28-23 win over Western Michigan. Shortell entered the game last in the second quarter after Gophers starter MarQueis Gray injured his left leg. Donnell Kirkwood carried the ball 23 times for 110 yards in the win. Vikings Trade for CB Jefferson


(Eden Prairie, MN) -- The Minnesota Vikings acquired cornerback A.J. Jefferson from the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday in exchange for undisclosed, conditional draft picks in 2013. Jefferson started seven of the 16 games he played last season, finishing with a career-high 67 tackles and one interception. He originally signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2010.

Vikings Finalize 53-Man Roster


(Minneapolis, MN) -- Veteran quarterback Sage Rosenfels and cornerback Chris Carr were among 20 players cut loose by the Minnesota Vikings Friday. The 34-year-old Rosenfels hasn't appeared in an NFL game since making five starts with Houston in 2008.
