02-09-2012-- As part of my job here at the radio station I travel to many communities around the state to cover Cardinal and other teams as they travel. I was asked if doing games at night after starting my day early in the morning was a "drag" on my energy. "Not at all," I said. "Doing the games is what keeps me going, it gives me energy, it doesn't sap my strength." The driving however can be a bit of a drag. I enjoy driving but if I could teleport myself to my longer road games I would.
Doing games on the road is a staple of our sports programming scheduling. I know we have more listeners to the road games than at home. I have always tried to cover the road games when there;s a conflicting game at home on the same night. It's part of the job. Besides in Minnesota the road trips aren't so bad, this Saturday at Moorhead is the longest trip we have this year and I'll get a chance to see my Uncle Richard from Devils Lake who's meeting me there for the games and an overnight stay.
Moorhead is planning something for one of their famous grads on Saturday. Cardinal girls hoops coach Brad Atchison is a Hall of Fame coach and Moorhead alum. It's nice that he is being honored there this weekend, hope I didn't just let the cat out of the bag. "Atch" and I arrived in Willmar the same season so I know it's been 17 years since he arrived in Willmar to take over the girls from longtime coach Shorty Schroeder. He has coached with class and style ever since and will be greatly missed by the girls hoops communtiy when he decides to retire. Rumors say that will be soon, but we'll see. I hope he continues, he's a great interview and makes my job so much easier. Who knows maybe a job as my color man when he does decide to hang up his whistlte?
Join me for the pregame for the girls from Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at about 12:50pm, the boys game will follow. I love the road!
