(St.Paul, MN) -- Backers and opponents of "frac sand" mining in southeastern Minnesota told their stories at the State Capitol today (Tues)as lawmakers consider whether stronger regulations are needed. Kirsten Pauly with the Minnesota Industrial Sand Council says the air emissions permit process typically takes six months to a year, and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency would not be issuing permits if there was an imminent threat to the welfare of adjacent residents. But Fred Troendle (TRUNDLE) with Concerned Citizens of Saint Charles says the M-P-C-A tells him they have not been able to reasonably monitor particulates from frac sand mining. Some opponents want a two-year moratorium on frac sand mining but Governor Dayton indicates that may be too long.
