Senate Approves State Employee Pay Raise

(St. Paul, MN)  --  Unionized state employees would get a two-percent pay raise retroactive to the first of the year and effective through the end of June -- under a bill the DFL-controlled Minnesota Senate approved this afternoon (Thurs) ratifying state labor contracts.  Majority Leader Tom Bakk (BOCK) says Minnesota public employees are more efficient than 43 other states and he wishes the the contract were more -- especially since state workers went without pay for several weeks during government shutdown in 2011.  Senate Republican Minority Leader David Hann (HAN) objects the new contract will pay state employees a lot more -- and adds taxpayers are being asked to pay more and expect less.   Hann says there should be stronger performance incentives in state employee contracts.
