Remembering the Fitzgerald

(Beaver Bay Township, MN) -- It was 37 years ago today that the entire crew of 29 men perished when the ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald went to the bottom of Lake Superior in a November gale. It came to rest in two pieces in 530 feet of water off Michigan's Whitefish Point. Hundreds are expected tonight at Split Rock Lighthouse as the beacon is given its once-a-year lighting, and a bell tolls 29 times while names are read of the crewmembers who died. Split Rock Lighthouse was decommissioned in 1969, six years before the Fitzgerald passed by on its fateful voyage. There has been no major shipwreck on Lake Superior since.
