Former Fire Chief Marv Calvin

Willmar looking to hire Public Works Director, Fire Chief

The City of Willmar is losing another department head, and this time there is not assistant to fill-in until a replacement is found. Willmar Public Works Director Holly Wilson is leaving to become the City Administrator in Pine City. Wilson was the Assistant Public Works Director under Mel Odens, and when he left, she was promoted, but never got an assistant of her own. Willmar City Clerk Kevin Halliday says the city needs to find a new public works director to sign off on street and infrastructure projects.  Fire Chief Marv Calvin resigned last month to take a job with MnScu, and Assistant Chief Jeff Gilbertson is filling-in until a permanent replacement is found. Halliday says 30 people have applied, and he says whoever is hired will have to wear many hats.  Halliday says they hope to have a new Fire Chief/Fire Marshall hired in about 30 days. As for Public Works Director, Halliday says the city can contract with a private firm until someone is hired.  Halliday says Mayor Frank Yanish is boosting the city budget by $240,000 for more infrastructure projects like street resurfacing. Halliday says Willmar should be an attractive town for people interested in the public works post. Willmar Municipal Utilities recently hired Wes Hompe as it's new general manager after Bruce Gomm was terminated in February.  (KWLM)
