Be Safe on Minnesota Lakes, Rivers This Weekend
(Undated) -- This Labor Day weekend, officials are urging caution in and around Minnesota's lakes, rivers and pools. Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek says it's been one of the state's deadliest summers in recent memory for drownings. Stanek says the deaths are tragic and preventable, and reminds Minnesotans to wear life jackets when they're on the water, and keep an eye on youngsters when they're out splashing around. Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death for children ages 14 and younger. Stanek recommends parents review safety rules and try to maintain visual contact with their children at all times when in or near the water.
