8-27-12 (St. Paul, MN)  --  Backers of the proposed constitutional amendments on marriage and voter photo-ID won two legal battles today (Mon) when the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled in their favor.  The high court refused a request to throw out the voter photo-ID ballot question.  The League of Women Voters and American Civil Liberties Union contend it's misleading because it doesn't tell voters that, if passed, same-day voter registration and absentee ballots could be affected.  But the high court says its role "is not to second-guess the wisdom of policy decisions that the constitution commits to one of the political branches" -- namely the legislature.  The Supreme Court also ruled in favor of a group of Republicans in the legislature, who challenged the *titles* that Democratic Secretary of State Mark Ritchie planned to print above each question on the ballot.  The justices said Ritchie "exceeded his authority...when he provided titles different from those passed by the Legislature."
