7-23-12 (Faribault, MN) -- A former nurse found guilty of encouraging two depressed people on-line to commit suicide does not need to report to jail pending his appeal to the Minnesota Supreme Court. Just last week, the Minnesota Court of Appeals upheld 49-year-old William Melchert-Dinkel's convictions. He was found guilty last year of aiding the suicides of a British man and a Canadian woman in on-line chat rooms. Melchert-Dinkel acknowledges he went on-line and gave the victims advice on how to hang themselves, but his attorney says he was exercising his free speech rights. Melchert-Dinkel faces jail time unless his conviction is overturned by the state Supreme Court.
