Elder Abuse Awareness Day
6-15-12 -- Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. This year, officials are focusing on helping seniors protect themselves from potential scams. In addition, state Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman says the goal is to train doctors, social workers, nurses and all those who work with seniors on how to spot financial stress when someone has been defrauded. A recent elder fraud survey shows one out of every five senior citizens over 65 has been victimized by financial swindle. Rothman says senior citizens control nearly 70-percent of the nation’s wealth and, unfortunately, crooks know it.
