Supreme Court Considering Amendment Ballot Title Challenge
7-31-12 (St. Paul, MN) -- The Minnesota Supreme Court is considering Republican lawmakers' challenge to the *titles* that Democratic Secretary of State Mark Ritchie wants printed on the ballot above the marriage amendment and voter photo-ID questions. On the marriage amendment question, Ritchie wants the title to read "Limiting the status of marriage to opposite sex couples." Republican lawmakers say it should read "Recognition of marriage solely between one man and one woman." Their attorney, Jordan Lorence (LOR-ence) says the legislature has final authority to determine the titles, because it proposes constitutional amendments. But Solicitor General Alan Gilbert, representing Ritchie, warns Republicans' request will undo 90 years of constitutional amendments that voters passed under a law allowing the secretary of state to determine ballot titles.
