Debt Collection Scam Grows
(Undated) -- Con artists have taken in nearly five-million dollars nationwide, including in Minnesota, using a debt collection scam. Victims get a call from someone claiming to be a collection agent and are threatened with being arrested if they don't make an immediate payment over the phone. The Minnesota Better Business Bureau's Dan Hendrickson says under the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, debt collectors cannot call and threaten people with arrests. He adds consumers have rights to dispute a debt and ask for proof of the debt.
