(Moorhead, MN) -- A Fargo man who was charged with a brutal rape and assault last September in Moorhead told investigators he didn't do it. A May trial date was set for 46-year-old Richard Haaland, but the case was closed after Haaland died last week in his Fargo apartment. During police interviews Haaland maintained his innocence, saying "I didn't do this. Whatever happened here I did not do this. I didn't rape anybody and that's the God's honest truth." But prosecutors say they have DNA that proves Haaland was responsible. Assistant Clay County Attorney Pam Harris says the evidence against Haaland is clear and convincing. The cause of Haaland's death remains under investigation.
