(Undated)-- 3-11-13-- A pair of Willmar Cardinals athletic teams will undergo big changes in their post season play for the next two years after they either changed sections (boys hockey) or in the case of the wrestlers, changed what class they compete. The wrestling team is the two-time defending Section 6 Class AAA champions but will move to Class AA for the next two years according to the latest section assignmenst announced by the state high school league over the weekend. The grapplers will be placed in Section 6 AA for the next two years, a tough section that includes Foley, Litchfield and New London-Spicer to name a few.
The boys hockey team has always felt they belong in Section 6 Class A where they spent the last four years. That section includes many Central Lakes Conference teams and schools to the North of Willmar. The Cardinals however will be heading southwest for the next two years as they have been placed back in Section 3 Class A. That section reigning champion is Marshall and also includes Hutchinson, Morris-Benson Area, Fairmont, Litchfield, Luverne, Redwood Valley, Windom and Worthington. (KWLM Sports)
